In today's day and age it's critically important to check a contractor's reputation. Just about anybody can come up with a few people to say nice things about them. It is something else entirely to have hundreds or even thousands of people saying nice things. It's why we are so proud that our customers have taken the time to say some nice things about us.

But in today's marketplace testimonials alone are just not good enough. Hiring a contractor should be handled just like a job interview – you need to ask a lot of questions and always ask for references.

But not all references are equal. You need to make sure that you actually call them and you need to make sure that you have a nice mix. What I mean by that is that you don't want to talk to just recent clients, but also some clients that are a few years old. Why? Because with the older clients you have a chance to talk to someone after the fact and with enough time to see if anything has gone wrong with their project.

Second, don't be embarrassed. Every one of our past clients would love to talk to you. They have given us permission to use them as a reference – they want to talk to you. The only thing we ask is to be respectful of their time and be aware of the time you are calling.

Lastly, here is just a few questions you may want to consider asking.

  • Were you happy with their work?
  • Was the process free of high-pressure sales?
  • Was the process easy and free from hassles and worry?
  • How responsive were they to any questions or requests?
  • How difficult was it to get in touch with them?
  • How close were they to their estimate when they finished?
  • Were there any hidden gimmicks or gotchas?
